SB1 Contextual Research; GIF

The Wretch - Tony Johnson (GIF)

How the artwork is made

This piece looks as though it was created digitally in photoshop then animated. Segments of the body may have been on different layers to allow for easier movement and animation (such as the head moving up and down). The GIF itself consists of 22 cells which allows for smooth movement between each frame. The piece was originally a still illustration.

What it communicates

This GIF was created for the online animation magazine Skwigly; to be used as a banner for this month (February). To me, this GIF communicates preciously what it was named; the character of a wretch. The definition of a wretch is an unfortunate or unhappy person, and I believe this animation captures that perfectly. The physical condition of the figure alongside the facial expression and simplistic movement of inhaling and exhaling all works together to portray a truly unfortunate and unhappy character.

Why you like it

I like this GIF because it shows what can be created through subtle actions or movements; the character doesn't have to be running around interacting with other objects within a complex backdrop. A sense of character, emotion and message can be communicated purely through gesture and facial expression alone.
